Post-traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is a disorder that develops in some people who have experienced a shocking, scary, or dangerous event.

Governor Bruce Rauner recently indicated that he will sign into law a bill to add PTSD and terminal illness to the qualifying conditions. Beginning on August 2nd, 2016, we can now submit applications, as well as send your physician certification for PTSD.

PTSD affects 8% of Americans (over 24 million people). Also, women are twice as likely as men of having PTSD.

It is natural to feel afraid during and after a traumatic situation. Fear triggers many split-second changes in the body to help defend against danger or to avoid it. This quick response is a typical reaction meant to protect a person from harm.

Everyone will experience a range of reactions after trauma, yet most people recover from initial symptoms naturally. Those who continue to experience problems may be diagnosed with PTSD.

People with PTSD may feel stressed or frightened even when they are not in danger. Some of the signs and symptoms of PTSD include:

  • At least one of each of these: re-experiencing symptom. avoidance symptom,
  • At least two of each of these: arousal / reactivity symptoms and cognition and mood symptoms

Re-experiencing Symptoms (one of these):

  • Flashbacks—reliving the trauma over and over, including physical symptoms like a racing heart or sweating
  • Nightmares
  • Frightening thoughts

Avoidance symptoms include (one of these):

  • Staying away from places, events, or objects that are reminders of the traumatic experience
  • Avoiding thoughts or feelings related to the traumatic event
